Great coffee has a reputation for sprawling gear, but the truth runs the other way: some of the best-regarded brewing methods are the smallest. A cone dripper lives in a cupboard. A hand grinder fits a drawer. The trick isn't shrinking a big setup — it's choosing tools that were never big to begin with.

Choose gear that stores flat or stacks

The space-smart trio is a hand burr grinder, a cone dripper that nests on top of your mug, and a stovetop gooseneck kettle that replaces your regular kettle rather than joining it. Add a flat scale and paper filters and the whole kit occupies less room than a toaster — most of it vertical or in a drawer.

The two-square-foot coffee kit

  • Hand burr grinder (drawer)
  • Ceramic or plastic cone dripper (nests on a mug)
  • Stovetop gooseneck kettle (replaces the old kettle)
  • Flat rechargeable scale (stands on its side)
  • Cone filters and an airtight canister (one shelf)
